Tetramethylsilane (TMS) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula (CH3)4Si. It is commonly used as a reference standard in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. TMS is a volatile, colorless liquid that is highly flammable. It has a low boiling point and evaporates easily.

In NMR spectroscopy, TMS is used as an internal standard to calibrate the chemical shift scale. It has a distinctive peak in the NMR spectrum that is set at 0 ppm (parts per million) on the standard scale. By referencing other peaks in the spectrum relative to the TMS peak, chemists can determine the chemical shifts of different compounds and analyze their structures.

TMS is also used as a reagent in organic chemistry reactions. It can act as a source of trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups, which are often used to protect reactive functional groups during chemical synthesis.
