etramethylsilane (TMS), also known as tetramethylsilicon or (CH3)4Si, is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula Si(CH3)4. It is a colorless liquid that is highly flammable and has a strong odor. TMS is commonly used as a reference compound in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
In NMR spectroscopy, TMS is used as an internal standard or reference compound to calibrate chemical shifts. It is added to the sample being analyzed, and its signal is used as a reference point to determine the chemical shifts of other signals in the spectrum. TMS is preferred as a reference compound because it produces a single, sharp peak at a known chemical shift (0 ppm) in most NMR solvents.
