Production and Structure:
- Boron trichloride is produced industrially by direct chlorination of boron oxide and carbon at 501 °C.
- It has a trigonal planar molecular structure and a bond length of 175 pm.
Reactions:
- Boron trichloride readily hydrolyzes to give hydrochloric acid and boric acid.
- It forms adducts with tertiary amines, phosphines, ethers, thioethers, and halide ions.
- Reduction of boron trichloride can be conducted to obtain elemental boron .
Uses:
- Boron trichloride is used in the production of elemental boron and in the refining of aluminum, magnesium, zinc, and copper alloys to remove impurities .
- It is used as a soldering flux, in the manufacture of electrical resistors, and in the field of high-energy fuels and rocket propellants.
- Boron trichloride is also used in plasma etching in semiconductor manufacturing .
